The Orders of Arthropods
Arthropods make up several classes: Insecta (Insects), Crustacea (including desert shrimp, crayfish and sowbugs), Diplopoda (millipedes), Chilopoda (Centipedes), and Arachnida (spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks, whip scorpions and solpugids). The classes are composed of orders, some larger in number of species than all of the vertebrate classes.
NOTE: The old order Orthoptera now is divided into four orders. We have listed both names so they can easily be matched. Some arachnid orders are known by two names. Crustacean classification differs somewhat in level in many books; what may be called a class in one book may be called a subphylum in another.
